The Sauber-Mercedes C9 was and remains one of the great sportscar prototypes. Having made its World Sportscar Championship debut in 1987, it became a winner in ’88, its five-liter twin-turbo V8 often taking the fight to and prevailing over the normally aspirated V12 TWR Jaguars. But in the end, Martin Brundle and Jaguar beat Jean-Louis Schlesser and Mercedes to the top spots in the drivers’ and teams’ championships, and Jaguar conquered Le Mans, while Sauber withdrew after a tire failure on the Mulsanne straight in practice.
A lot can change in a year. In ’89, Sauber-Mercedes C9s – now in classic Benz silver livery – won all but one round of the WSC, and Schlesser was crowned champion. His usual partner, Jochen Mass, didn’t get to share the title because he missed the opening round, but he did conquere the big one – the 24 Hours of Le Mans, shown here, sharing driving duties with Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens. Of course, had Le Mans been part of the WSC that year, the points he gained would have also seen Mass finish the season as champ…
