The 1992 CART Indy car season started with promise for legend Rick Mears, when he drove the Penske-Chevrolet PC21 to second in the season-opener at Surfers Paradise. However, by the Month of May, it was clear the car still needed some work, and on the fifth day of practice for the Indy 500, Mears crashed when a fractured pipe sprayed coolant on his rear tires. He qualified ninth, but during the race got caught in someone else’s accident and again wrenched his wrist, forcing him to miss the Detroit race the following week. Now 40 years old, Mears started questioning his own motivation. A front-row start at Milwaukee ended in a DNF, while fourth at New Hampshire’s Loudon track – illustrated here – would prove to be Rick’s final top-five finish. Further aggravation of his wrist injury caused more missed races and one of Indy car racing’s greats elected to call time on a brilliant career.
