Nigel Mansell Ferrari 640 Poster

Regular price $26.00
The Ferrari 640 was one of several masterpieces from the drawing board of John Barnard, its elegant shape clothing a 3.5-liter V12 and a semi-automatic gearbox. The electronics for the ’box would be the car’s undoing in terms of reliability during the first half of the season, and its engine didn’t match the V10s from Honda and Renault at this stage, yet the stars aligned for Nigel Mansell to win on his Ferrari debut at the season-opening Brazilian Grand Prix. In this image, Mansell is shown exiting the Monaco tunnel, in the final race for the 640 in its “purest” form, with NACA-style air intakes behind the driver’s head. From the fourth round, in Mexico, Ferrari would adopt the overhead “periscope”-style intake, and it was in this form that Mansell would claim victory in Hungary, and teammate Gerhard Berger would win in Portugal. They would finish fourth and seventh in the championship respectively.
