1973 Tyrrell 006-Cosworth
Jackie Stewart already had two wins and three poles at Monaco by the time he arrived for his final race there in ’73. After starting the season with a couple of podium finishes in Tyrrell 005, he had then given the 006 a win on its debut in Kyalami. Despite qualifying 16th, he was leading by Lap 7, and was never headed again. He retired with brake failure from the Spanish Grand Prix, but headed Francois Cevert in a Tyrrell 1-2 at the Belgian GP in Nivelles. Monaco had changed considerably for ’73 to more closely resemble the layout we know today, but it made no difference to Stewart. He took pole, and while he lost out to Cevert, Ronnie Peterson and Clay Regazzoni at the start, Cevert damaged his suspension on a curb, Regazzoni went up an escape road, and Peterson suffered a fuel-feed problem. Stewart was into the lead by Lap 8, and beat all but Emerson Fittipaldi by more than a lap. It was the race in which Stewart matched the record 25 wins accumulated by his Scottish friend and compatriot, the late Jim Clark. JYS would add two more wins that year, clinch his third World Championship, and retire.
