1966 BRM P261
Jackie Stewart had made a huge splash in his rookie season of Formula 1 with BRM, racking up a third place and three runner-up finishes before scoring his first win at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. BRM’s clunky H16 engine wasn’t ready for the new 3-liter regulations at the start of ’66, so Stewart plugged on with the P261 now fitted with a two-liter V8. Several such cars proved an underpowered but nimble car was ideal for the season-opening race on the streets of Monaco (pictured), so when John Surtees 3-liter Ferrari broke its differential while leading on the 14th lap, Stewart was there to pick up the pieces and score his second GP win. The rest of the season and throughout ’67, Stewart suffered appalling reliability and so in ’68, he was racing a Tyrrell-run Matra.
