1952-’54 Kurtis Kraft 500-Offy

Man and machine in perfect harmony – that was Bill Vukovich and his Kurtis Kraft 500A-Offenhauser, the Fuel Injection Special. Driving for Howard Keck, and putting all his trust in Jim Travers and Frank Coon, his chief mechanics, “Vuky” was near unbeatable. In ’52, he led 150 laps, only to suffer a steering arm failure that put him in the wall on Lap 192. The following year he took pole (despite his qualifying run ending in the rain!) and led 195 laps on his way to victory by three-and-a-half minutes. In ’54, reliability issues throughout practice confined Vukovich to 19th on the grid, but the car – and driver – were flawless on race day, scything through the field to lead 90 laps and win again. This beautiful form-defined-by-function car was then retired, Keck shut down the team before the ’55 Indy 500, and so Vuky, Travers and Coon joined Lindsey Hopkins’ team. Arguably the Speedway’s greatest driver was dominating the ’55 edition, when he got caught in someone else’s accident with tragic results.
