1989 March 89P-Porsche

Porsche’s first Indy car project in 1980 was stillborn, and its attempt to build its own chassis, the 2708, was proven ill-advised when the car struggled to get out of its own way in the final two races of 1987. Porsche made a decision in the off-season to buy a March 88C for the 1988 season, and Teo Fabi was hired after his F1 contract with Benetton ended. That first full season was rough, the best result being a fourth place, but for 1989, Porsche commissioned March to build a custom car for its engine. The March 89P swiftly showed promise and the Derrick Walker-run team prepared it well. After a slew of top five finishes, including two podiums, and a pole position at Portland, everything came right for Fabi at Mid-Ohio, taking pole and victory. Fabi went on to finish fourth in the 1989 championship, but Porsche withdrew at the end of ’90, having been politically outmaneuvered by rival team owners in CART.
