1974 McLaren M16C/D-Offenhauser

Gordon Coppuck’s McLaren M16 conquered the Indianapolis 500 three times in a five-year span – and could have been a five-time winner. Its legacy should have started at Indy in 1971, the M16’s debut. Mark Donohue in the Penske-run example dominated the first quarter of the race but retired with gearbox failure. And pole-winner Peter Revson in the works McLaren should then have been able to handle all comers, but his and the McLaren team’s lack of experience at Indy gave Al Unser and Vel’s Parnelli Jones Racing the edge they needed to win. Donohue won the 500 in an M16B in ’72, McLaren’s new recruit Johnny Rutherford took pole in an M16C in ’73 but the car broke an exhaust header on race day. In the M16C/D form shown here, with popoff valves and reduced wing sizes as per new-for-1974 USAC regulations, Rutherford soared through the field from 25th on the grid to claim his first of three Indy 500 wins. He lost out to the rain and Bobby Unser in ’75, but drove an M16E into Victory Circle in ’76.
