The sensational-looking Alfa Romeo 158 lived up to its appearance, especially when Grand Prix racing restarted following World War II. In this 1.5-liter supercharged straight-eight form, it was producing 300hp-plus, And without question, until Juan Manuel Fangio arrived on the scene, its finest exponent was France’s Jean-Pierre Wimille. This image portrays his superb drive to victory in his home race Reims in 1948. Tragically, Wimille was to die less than a year later when he crashed his Gordini in practice for the 1949 Buenos Aires Grand Prix. Giuseppe Farina and Fangio would drive Alfa 158s to first and second in the inaugural year of the Formula 1 World Championship, 1950, and the following year Fangio would prevail in the updated 159.
