Regular price $26.00
Danny Ongais was well worthy of his soubriquets – “On-the-gas” and “The Flyin’ Hawaiian” – even before he became a star in Indy car racing. As early as 1960, at the age of 18, he was Hawaiian motorcycle champion before turning his attention to drag racing. In 1969, he won the NHRA Funny Car title, along the way claiming wins in the Spring Nationals and U.S. Nationals. The point is, he wasn’t afraid of horsepower! After landing backing from Ted Field of Interscope Records, Ongais reached Formula 5000 in 1975, while in ’76 (illustrated here) driving a Shadow DN6, he finished fifth in the championship with three podium finishes to his name. A switch to Indy car with Vel’s Parnelli Jones Racing saw Ongais, still with Interscope backing, make further progress and across the ’77 and ’78 seasons, Ongais delivered six wins and 11 poles.
