Bernd Schneider could have been a Formula 1 star – his junior formula performances suggested he was heading that way. But driving for Zakspeed in F1 – powered by the team’s self-built turbocharged engine in 1988 and then a lamentable Yamaha V8 in ’89 – meant he couldn’t shine. Mercedes-Benz, however, recognized a formidable homegrown talent when it saw one, and got him onboard its touring cars in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM). Swiftly, the wins began and over 1992-’93, Schneider scored seven victories in a 190E Evo 2. AMG Mercedes-Benz switched to the Mercedes C-class for 1994 (two wins for Schneider), and in ’95 – illustrated here – Schneider was the Class One touring car king, winning both the DTM and International Touring Car championships, amassing 11 wins from 24 races.
