This car’s predecessor, the XJR-8, probably had the capability of winning Le Mans in 1987 but a blend of errors from driver and crew allowed Porsches 962 to rule once more. The Tom Walkinshaw Racing-run operation was far more slick in ’88 and this time it was a Porsche driver, Klaus Ludwig, who made the crucial error of running the lead 962 out of fuel and limping back to the pits. The No. 2 Jaguar, driven by Jan Lammers, Andy Wallace and Johnny Dumfries, suffered gearbox issues in the closing hours, such that Lammers was driving the whole course in fourth gear, which allowed the Bell/Stuck/Ludwig back on the lead lap. But the seven-liter V12 coped with the strain and TWR Jaguar ended Porsche’s Le Mans-winning streak of seven straight triumphs. Paul Laguette’s illustration captures the victorious Tony Southgate-designed XJR-9 on its landmark run.
