It’s not unusual for Gordon Murray to come up with a classic car, but doing so in less than two months is remarkable even by his standards. On learning, just six weeks prior to the opening round of the 1983 season, that ground effect cars were banned, Murray was forced to abandon his fully constructed BT51s and penned a new design. No longer needing vast amounts of underbody surface area for ground effect, he reduced the sidepods on the BT52 to form an arrowhead shape at the back of the car. Anticipating vast amounts of horsepower from the four-cylinder turbocharged BMW engine, this rearward shift in weight distribution also maximized traction. The result was a striking, handsome winner, which produced four victories – three for Nelson Piquet (pictured) and one for Riccardo Patrese – and also made Piquet the first turbocharged World Champion in Formula 1 history.
