Despite three wins at Le Mans, the 936 is sometimes unfairly overlooked in the pantheon of great Porsches, as successor to the 908 and 917, and predecessor to the 956/962 models. But it will go down in history as the car in which six-time Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx produced one of his greatest drives. Ickx’s own car died in the fourth hour when co-driver Henri Pescarolo blew the engine with a missed gearshift, so he was transferred to the Jurgen Barth/Hurley Haywood-piloted No. 4 car (pictured here) which was running 15 laps down after fuel pump and head gasket issues. Ickx was given the green light by Porsche to go flat out through the night, and by the time he reached his maximum allowable time in the car at 9am on Sunday morning, he was in second and had recovered nine of those 15 laps. When the leading Alpine Renault then blew a piston, Barth was left in the lead and Porsche took a famous victory. Ickx’s crucial role in this victory and the distinctive lines of the 936 prototype are portrayed here by RACER’s Paul Laguette.
