1982 Audi quattro
Michele Mouton had shown well in part-time seasons with Lancia and Fiat France, but it was the call to run a full program with Audi Sport in 1981 that gave her the chance to prove her talent alongside established great, Hannu Mikkola in the new all-wheel-drive quattro. After scoring her first victory in the Sanremo Rally in ’81, she finished eighth in the championship, five places behind Mikkola. But the following season, she scored three victories – Portugal, Acropolis and Brazil – to Mikkola’s two and beat him to second in the championship. She lost out in the title race to Opel’s Walter Rohrl, who took two wins. Mouton would score four more top-three finishes with Audi, who would evolve the quattro into the short-wheelbase quattro sport before the FIA ended the Group B era.
