Banned before it could race, 1981’s Lotus 88 remains one of Formula 1’s most intriguing “what ifs?” Lotus founder Colin Chapman was renowned for thinking outside the box and, along with engineers Peter Wright, Tony Rudd and Martin Ogilvie, conceived the 88 as a way of producing massive levels of downforce from an ingenious twin-chassis layout – a relatively conventional inner chassis, plus an independently-sprung outer chassis which acted as one huge ground-effect tunnel. Could it have returned Lotus to the front of the F1 grid? We’ll never know. Yet despite not starting a grand prix, the 88 has taken on legendary status, and RACER in-house artist Paul Laguette’s striking homage captures why. With Elio de Angelis at the wheel, the Lotus races through a bitmapped landscape when Pac-Man ruled the world. “For me, the 88 was so much of its time,” says Paul. “I wanted to remind people when this car was designed, and where video and computing was at.”
