Throw a ball in a crowded Formula 1 paddock – or indeed, any place where motorsport enthusiasts gather – and you will not hit a single person who would deny Adrian Newey is a genius. His talents became apparent in CART Indy car racing, where he engineered Bobby Rahal, Michael Andretti and Mario Andretti in the mid-1980s, and all three were left in awe of his engineering talents. But it was on his return to March, after a brief spell at Lola, that Newey was given the task of penning the 881 for F1’s transition year, 1988, as Grand Prix racing switched from its first turbo era to all normally-aspirated engines for ’89. Despite running a Judd engine that produced around 600hp – about 100hp shy of the turbocharged units from Honda and Ferrari – March increasingly became a thorn in the side of the big guns. Ivan Capelli (pictured) and Mauricio Gugelmin often outqualified turbocharged cars because Newey’s design allowed them to carry so much more speed through the corners. Capelli’s high points 881 were passing Ayrton Senna and finishing second to Alain Prost in the Portuguese Grand Prix, and (very) briefly leading the Japanese GP when Prost fumbled a gearchange. Gugelmin’s highlight was third with the year-old car in the 1989 season-opener in front of his cheering Brazilian fans.
