When one talks of versatility in a motorsport, one thinks of Mario Andretti and Stirling Moss, then probably Jimmy Clark, Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney, A.J. Foyt – winners in anything and everything to which they turned their leather-gloved hands. But John Surtees took versatile to a whole new level. His extraordinary achievement in becoming World Champion in premier motorcycling seven times (four on 500cc, three on 350cc) and then adding a Formula 1 title will surely never be matched.

What further impresses is how rapidly he developed his skills on four wheels – he finished second in his second Grand Prix and took pole and fastest lap in his third, both with Lotus, but further honed his skills over two years in the midfield Yeoman Racing Team, racking up seven top five finishes including two more podiums. A move to Ferrari was exactly what he and the Scuderia needed, and he delivered victory in the German Grand Prix and pole position at Monza driving the V6 Ferrari 156. But it was the team’s move to the V8 Ferrari 158 for 1964 that made Surtees a regular threat to the Lotus of established benchmark Clark. Two podium positions were followed up by pole and victory at the Nurburgring again, and pole and victory at Monza (pictured here). Finishing the season with two runner-up placings when Clark hit mechanical strife was enough for Surtees to clinch the World Championship.
