Gilles Villeneuve would become the fastest driver in Formula 1, but in his first full season, with just three previous F1 races under his wheels, it seemed a bit much to expect a driver who had directly graduated from Formula Atlantic to match his Ferrari teammate, the brilliant Carlos Reutemann. Although he decisively led Long Beach until tangling with a backmarker, it wasn’t until the final third of the season that Villeneuve and Reutemann appeared on par. Villeneuve’s Ferrari 312T3 led most of the Italian Grand Prix but was passed by Mario Andretti’s Lotus with five laps to go – although both were penalized a minute for having jumped the start. But in the season finale in front of his home fans at Montreal, Villeneuve was running second when leader Jean-Pierre Jarier’s Lotus failed, and drove home to a hugely popular victory. In the year ahead, Villeneuve would become a superstar.
