For many of us, the BMW CSL is the most elegant streetcar-based racecar of all time, but in terms of aesthetics alone, it faces stiff competition from its own baby brother, the 320i Turbo. Those flared fenders, air-scoops and outrageous rear wing saw an attractive compact sedan complete a transformation like Dr. Bruce Banner’s into The Incredible Hulk. When BMW then commissioned its third Art Car (the previous two wild paint schemes were applied to CSLs), the 320i Turbo started down the road to BMW history. American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein came up with a “Ben Day dots” design that suggests the reflected landscape along its flanks. Entrant Hervé Poulain and Marcel Mignot drove to ninth place overall, second in the IMSA GT category in the 1977 Le Mans 24 Hours. Even had the car not performed so impressively, RACER’s in-house artist Paul Laguette appreciated the car’s startling livery – and of course he couldn’t resist the “Pop!” pun of this mighty little beast on the overrun.
