Ayrton Senna Penske PC21 Poster

Regular price $26.00
After five seasons and three World Championships with McLaren-Honda, Ayrton Senna was disappointed to learn that Honda’s withdrawal from Formula 1 would leave McLaren running a Ford V8 in 1993. Having just spent a season being outgunned by the Williams-Renaults of Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese, and with Mansell’s replacement Alain Prost refusing to countenance the idea of Senna as his teammate in ’93, Senna pondered the idea of a switch to Indy car racing. Compatriot Emerson Fittipaldi oiled the wheels of process at Team Penske, and so, on Dec. 10, 1992, Senna tested the outgoing Penske PC21-Chevrolet at Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix. He wound up 0.61sec faster than Fittipaldi, reveling in the fact that Indy cars had no so-called driver aids and manual gearboxes. Senna suggested that one day Indy cars would be in his future… but not his immediate future. He eventually made a deal for one more season at McLaren, and in 1993 produced some of the finest drives of his career, resulting in five wins.
