The R10 TDI was one of Audi’s masterpieces in endurance racing, and this image depicts its third straight victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Without the outright speed of the Peugeot 908 HDi in qualifying, the deficit was reduced in race conditions, and once rain struck the course at the halfway point, Audi was right back in the game. By 5am, Allan McNish (pictured) had a lap in hand over the best of the Peugeots, and while this gap reduced as the track dried, the rain returned and the French team’s ace Nicolas Minassian elected to stay on slicks, resulting in a spin. The two lead cars finished on the same lap, but McNish, Tom Kristensen and “Dindo” Capello had added a fifth consecutive Le Mans triumph to Audi’s remarkable tally in the final Le Mans outing for the R10. This diesel dominator is captured wonderfully by RACER’s in-house artist Paul Laguette.
