McLaren is renowned for its success in Formula 1, Can-Am and Indy car racing, but one of its most surprising triumphs came in sports car racing. Gordon Murray’s remarkable F1, powered by a 6.1-liter BMW V12, won the 24 Hours of Le Mans at its very first attempt, despite never having been designed as a race car! With the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours blighted by heavy rain, the theoretically much faster prototypes struggled, allowing the LMGT1 cars to come to the fore. In the worst of the wet conditions at night, former Formula 1 driver JJ Lehto lapped the winning car of Kokusai Kaihatsu Racing up to 30sec per lap faster than much of its opposition, and ultimately Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya, prevailed over a Courage Porsche prototype and three other McLarens. The winning car’s all-black livery was a photographer’s nightmare – especially in gloomy or nighttime conditions – but Paul Laguette’s illustration brings it to life…
